Verizon to offer tiered data pricing on Apple iPad

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) will offer a number of data plans for customers who purchase Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad through Verizon's outlets--the carrier previously had advertised only one data option.

According to Verizon's iPad FAQ, the carrier will offer 3 GB of data for $35 and 5 GB of data for $50. Both plans will be month-to-month, and come with overage fees of $10 per 1 GB of data. Verizon had previously said it would only offer month-to-month data access of 1 GB for $20 per month. The $20 plan has an overage fee of $20 per 1 GB.

Verizon will begin selling the WiFi version of the iPad Oct. 28, bundled with its MiFi mobile hotspot product (the company will also sell just the WiFi version of the iPad). The announcement touched off more speculation that Verizon soon will start selling the Apple iPhone. Recent reports have indicated that Apple is building a CDMA version of the iPhone that Verizon will launch early next year; both companies have declined to comment on the speculation.

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), currently the exclusive built-in 3G service provider for the iPad, said it will start selling the iPad 3G model Oct. 28. AT&T offers no-contract 3G data plans for the iPad of $14.99 per month for 250 MB and $25 per month for 2 GB.
