Verizon-Alltel deal leaves subscriber gaps

About 2 million Alltel customers have been left in limbo while Verizon Wireless integrates the regional wireless provider into its operations following the close of its $28.1 billion acquisition of Alltel last week.

Many Alltel customers in rural parts of the South will be left stranded until a buyer is found for the territory. As a condition of the acquisition, Verizon agreed to divest from 105 markets where its service overlapped with Alltel. Divested territories will continue to have service while a buyer is being found.

The majority of Alltel's subscribers will automatically have their service switched to Verizon, and may be integrated as early as this spring, but the remaining subscribers will have to switch to Verizon on their own. The divested territory is being managed by a trust in the interim.

"If they are interested in becoming a Verizon customer, then it is a normal process. They would have to port their number. They would have to come into one of our locations. It is just as though they were with another carrier," said Verizon spokeswoman Caran Smith. Smith added that these customers will face penalties from terminating their Alltel service and switching to Verizon, as they are still technically Alltel customers.

What a crock for these subscribers. I say screw both Alltel and Verizon. Go with a company who is at least focusing on customer service these days - Sprint.

Sprint? Seriously? They need to focus on their loser network rather than customer service.

There is no reason these subscribers should be penalized!!

There is currently MORE than enough reps in call centers and around the markets to help the 2.5-3 million Alltel customers that remained Alltel. Quit freaking out...

Sprint runs exactly the same "loser network" as verizon. Except they cover more pops and a larger area (only slightly larger, but larger nonetheless). Also they have the best data throughput and a ton of capacity.

Sprint is the worst network. They've been bleeding subscribers for years and have some of the worst ratings out there. Their handset selection fails to compare to an AT&T or Verizon.

Also remember that it wasn't Alltel or Verizon who chose to give up those markets, but it was the government who made them divest of the markets for competitive reasons. If they didn't, then the subscribers in those markets would likely have one choice....Verizon or nothing. So they're doing you a favor by giving you a choice.

Wow thats a shame. They should waive the etf since they are moving to Verizon. I could see the etf if they were switching to another carrier. I guess they will do credit checks too. I had att wireless in 05, went to cingular with no probs. Just upgrade fee, couldnt go wrong with that. I feel sorry 4 you southern folks, damn yankees comin in with their cityfolk arragent attitudes.

No subscribers are penalized. This happens with every wireless merger. To the subscribers, it will seem like nothing happens. They won't lose service, they won't suddenly get strange bills, changes are all on the corporate end, financing and organizational charts.

Just read the latest issue of Consumer Reports and you will see that Verizon is the best for service. They only lost to one Carrier in a couple of markets and that was Alltel. They also rate highest in customer satisfaction and best in customer turnover rate.
It really does suck that those customers don't get to become Verizon. I live in one of those areas. But the guy who said it is good for them is right. Where i live. it is pretty much Alltel or nothing right now. There is US Cell but they really blow. So to keep options open for customers prevents a Monopoly because our gov't isn't really a fan of those.

I am the director of a southern state Chamber of Commerce that will be affected by this buyout. First, it is not a "merger", it is Alltel giving up all of its assets, and customers, to Verizon in exchange for money. Alltel will have no say in the way their former customers are dealt with. This is a bad deal for former Alltel customers.
Someone said ther wouldn't be any change in your bill. That is not true. Alltel was the last company to offer true "unlimited" internet access. Every other company just happens to charge $59.99 for 5Gb's of transfer per month. Alltel charged $25.00 to tether and I never had a single call from them, even when I used double what other carriers allow. If you don't see the price fixing by all the carriers, then ignorance is bliss, but every company didn't just "happen" to leave their corporate meeting and have the exact same plan for data access and the same price, $.05 per meg over the limit. And they do charge it.
I like competition in business. It is always better to have companies competing. If it wasn't, then they wouldn't buy their competitors. Nothing good will come from this buyout.

These customers are not in limbo. The divested company is working as a separate entity under the ALLTEL brand--these customers will be treated with the same outstanding service as always under ALLTEL! Don't believe the hype!

This is simply not true--these customers are not in limbo and will be treated in the same way as always, there will be no distinction. ALLTEL will continue to serve these markets with the same outstanding customer service in mind as usual! Know the facts before you post lies and innuendo!

They are about to lose another and I for one will be happy to go. They will treat people just as they've learned to do more of over the years, with Mis-representation, Ever Less Respect, Appreciation & Cost Effectiveness or Saving to their People! Instead of people it's about money and making people Believe they are getting a deal while setting them up for the next higher payment. They are all Dirty, Manipulating, Con Artist, Fee & Surcharge, Bill Exaggerating, Advantage of Customer Taking, High Dollar, High Rent, High Maintenance, Over Stimulated, Ultra Wasteful, Disrespectful, Low Wage Paying, Low Life, Greedy, Government Tested & Approved Legal Thieves! Just like the rest of the Corporate Wall Street World!___(IMHO)

And No!... No I Did Not Sleep at a Holiday Inn Express Last Night! Couldn't Afford it! Already Made My Monthly Redundant Ridicules Re-Donations to The Needy CEO's & Takers of America's Hopes & Dreams Funds I call Over Billings.

Thus, I suppose helping the economy (Rather than Improving My Life).?.?.?
Well, what did you expect? I was afraid to put any lettuce, tomato, spinach, ketchup, peanut butter, or anything else on it... Hey, Ya Never Know!?! (((Grins)))

I live in one of the few markets that verizon picked their own customers to sell! I think the worst part is I sit here having no idea who will buy my contract! I personal don't think I will even consider going back to verizon after they dumped me to the wind.
