Verizon begins assimilating Alltel customers

Subscribers in Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Madison Heights, Martinsville and South Boston, Va., this weekend became the first Alltel customers to be switched to Verizon Wireless-branded service since the company's $28.1 billion acquisition of Alltel closed in early January.

Verizon spent the past few months integrating Alltel's network, switching over the billing systems, upgrading wireless broadband service and re-merchandising stores. Verizon's acquisition of Alltel made it the nation's largest wireless carrier in terms of total subscribers, with more than 80 million.

As a condition of the acquisition, Verizon agreed to divest 105 markets where its service overlapped with Alltel's. AT&T said in early May it would buy a large portion of the assets for $2.35 billion.

Hey hopefully verizon will cover central va as good as us cellular. Alltel was spotty

Whichever network was better in an area, they'll keep. If Alltel and Verizon both serviced that area in a major way, one network will be sold off to AT&T, so coverage will change a bit. Verizon prides itself in its network, so coverage should improve though.

I have been a Alltel customer for many years. I tried to get a upgrade from Verizon and they said that my phone was not from Verizon and therefor could not be up graded. If that is true then why can I still use my phnoe.

Because Verizon wants to sell you new phone so that they can make more money so they lie to you.

I have been an Alltel customer for years as well and Verizon has taken over our phone numbers and now I am finding out I will have roaming in areas I used to have coverage because I have an alltel plan yet pay verizon. I told the customer rep that this is not giving the company points for me to want to switch to their network. First it will cost me more and second i feel they are trying to bully me to do it. (Not an enthused customer)
