Verizon hit with third LTE outage in December

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) said in Thursday it restored LTE service overnight after suffering its third LTE outage this month and its fourth since it launched service in December 2010.

"4G LTE issue resolved overnight. 3G operated normally; calling, texting were unaffected," Verizon said in a statement Thursday. The company did not elaborate or comment on the nature or cause of the outage or on the extent of the disruption.

Verizon also was hit with an LTE outage on Dec. 7 and Dec. 21. The carrier has not explained the causes of those LTE outages.  A nationwide, 24-hour LTE outage in April was caused by a software bug in Verizon's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture.

Although service outages are never positive experiences for carriers, the continued LTE service disruptions carry special risk for Verizon, which has built its reputation on network reliability.
