Verizon to sell iPad with built-in connection to Verizon network

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) will eventually sell a version of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) popular iPad tablet that connects directly to its EVDO data network, a senior Verizon executive said, a further reflection of the tightening relationship between the two companies.

Verizon Communications CFO Francis Shammo told Bloomberg that Verizon will get an iPad specifically designed for its network. Shammo declined to say when Apple will launch the product.

Currently, Verizon sells a WiFi-only version of the iPad bundled with its MiFi product, which basically connects the iPad to Verizon's network via the MiFi as a middleman. Verizon began selling the iPad in October. AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), which lost its exclusive hold on the iPhone Tuesday when Verizon and Apple announced their partnership for the smartphone, remains the exclusive built-in 3G wireless provider for the iPad.

The promise of a future partnership between Verizon and Apple on the iPad is not entirely surprising; Apple indicated the two companies will collaborate on future products. Speaking at the Verizon iPhone launch event in New York City, Apple COO Tim Cook said the iPhone deal is represents "just the beginning of a great relationship between Apple and Verizon."

Apple sold 7.46 million iPads in its first two quarters of availability. The product has helped spawn dozens of competitors from an array of handset makers.
