Verizon sells out of HTC Touch Pro 2

Tools

It seemed like just two weeks ago that Verizon Wireless launched the HTC Touch Pro 2. It actually was, and the carrier has since sold out of the smartphone.

Verizon launched the Windows Mobile phone Sept. 11, shortly after Sprint Nextel and and T-Mobile USA. A check of Verizon's website shows that the Touch Pro 2 is now out of stock. The action may have something do with the smartphone's price; Verizon offered the device for $199.99 with a two year-contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate, while both Sprint and T-Mobile are shopping the phone for $349.99.

By teaming up with three of the four Tier 1 carriers for the phone, HTC may be hoping to replicate the success it had in making the original Touch Pro a mass-market smartphone. Three of the four Tier 1 carriers--Sprint, Verizon and AT&T Mobility (as the HTC Fuze)--offered the original Touch Pro, first introduced in the fall last year. In the second quarter, the Touch Pro was among the country's top 10 best-selling smartphones, according to IDC.

The Touch Pro 2 has a 3.6-inch WVGA TouchFLO 3D display, a tilt-capable screen, a full keyboard and a 3.2-megapixel camera. It also supports GSM and CDMA bands, making it a world phone. The smartphone runs a customized version of Windows Mobile 6.1; customers will eventually be able to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 when it becomes available.

AT&T is coming out with their version of the Touch Pro 2 with Win Mobile 6.5 (and their version of the Touch Diamond 2, also with 6.5) on October 5th or 6th. The TP2 will be called Tilt 2 and the TD2, the Pure. At least that is what my source in the AT&T retail chain told me (except for the 6.5 part, which came from elsewhere). TP2 at $200 and the Pure at $150, both prices are with a 2 yr. contract.

That's what happens when you price a phone right where it should be. Sprint you should learn something from Verizon.

I personally think it shows one of two things.

1) Verizon doesn't want many to get out before the 6.5 release because they will be a pain to upgrade.

or

2) People don't pay attention to the "real" cost of the phone given that Verizon will cost you much more than Sprint over the course of the two year contract.
Sprint 2 years: $2029.76
$350.00 phone
$69.99/mo for 24 months (450 minutes, unlimited data, unlimited texts)
Verizon 2 years: $2358.76
$199.00 phone
$89.98/mo for 24 months (450 minutes, unlimted data, 250 texts)

not sure where you're getting your pricing info, but my 450 min, unlimited data, unlimited text costs me 79.19 a month. fyi.

VERIZONWIRELESS.COM HAS MORE HTC TOUCH PRO 2s AS OF 12PM SUNDAY 9/27/09! JUST BOUGHT ONE!

Once again, someone reads a mis-quoted article on the internet and posts it somewhere else...

The actual Verizon Plan runs $39.99 + $29.99 + 10 for text... $79.98 total per month... Or $9.99 more than the Sprint "Everything Mobile" Plan.

So over your two years, Sprint is about $90 cheaper including the cost of the phone - with much poorer service in most areas, but a faster 3G network since it's not as crowded.

So there are pluses and minuses to everything.

I've discovered that every time I call Verizon to upgrade my plan from Alltel to a true Verizon plan - I'm told different things. No two reps have given me the same info.
Does anyone know when the HTC Touch Pro2 will be available again?

This is a good Idea and will really give programmers a lot of freedom when trying to develop new applications. My team has been waiting for this for a while. http://www.WHAMmobile.com

I didnt mis-quote an article I went to Verizon and Sprint sites and put each plan in my cart. Here is the line directly from the Verizon site:
"Unlimited Data Usage $44.99/month"

If you want to connect to an exchange server you are required to get the $44.99 data plan.

Don't rush to get the Verizon Touch Pro 2. It has far more bugs than the Sprint version. I have the Sprint Touch Pro 2 and it has bugs but nowhere near as bad as the Verizon version. My wife had the Verizon version and had to take it back. It drops calls and locks up which are 2 things a phone shouldn't do. Verizon had a firmware upgrade out and then pulled it off their website. If you have to get one, get the Sprint version. At least it doesn't lock up. My suggestion however,is to wait until either manufacturer fixes releases an upgrade.

We will see what happens when they implement windows mobile 6.5 in mid-October for the HTC. Only now I will speculate and take opinions.

and now, on 10/01/09 they are out again. as of today when i called, they were all on a backorder by request only. whatever that means.lol. i envy you for getting one. i am in wa state if that's of any value.

I'm sorry to hear that. My sympathies are with you.

I've been paying Sprint $30 tax included with 500 minutes, unlimited text and data for my plan. I would not care if I had to pay $500 for this phone!

Just so you know the difference... Unlimited Data usage at $44.99 a month includes Wireless Sync for business usage to sync with Windows mail aervers. If you do not need this service your price would be $29.99 for personal use and you're still able to use sync of email just not through the windows servers which syncs a lot more data.

So does anyone know if they will have them in stock by the 12th? Switching to verizon from AT&T with my uncle. Should I stay with them to get the tilt 2?

I have the TP2 from Verizon and its a great phone... I haven't seen any bugs.

I do believe that Verizon's plans are more expensive than Sprint.
When you guys listed the plan prices above, were you including the cost of the internet package that you HAVE to purchase if you purchase a smart phone?
It is my understanding that if you have a $49.99 plan, you have to pay an additional $29.99 for the smartphone features to work (i.e. internet).

Perhaps you should check out the verizon Connect plans. 69.99 gives you 450 minutes, unlimited data and unlimited texting. Still extra for the vcast and things, but who really uses that?

Unfortunately the connect plan is not available for smart phones.

I'm guessing that the TP2 will at least be available by next week when the Imagio is due in stores.

It seems logical to assume that when the Imagio dropped they would have the TP2 back in stock... and yet they are still out.

I got the Verizon's TP2 and it works wonderfully. I snatched it up while it was in stock for just 24 hours on October 14th. Fedex delivered it two days later. With 450 minutes, unlimited data, and 250 text msgs, my plan is at $79.99. Of course, I would love AT&T better since they have better coverage in my area and nothing beats their rollover minutes, but hey, you get what you pay for!

OK....out of stock AGAIN! I have been waiting and checking twice a day. Does anyone have a clue when this is coming back in stock, and is it best to find it online at Verizons website or in a store? I have been waiting on this phone for 3 months, researching it, and I cannot wait. My xv6800 is a nightmare.

To the people talking about At&t being better.. Ugh, everytime I've had any issues with my phone Verizon is on top of it back dating any plan I can conceive of. I don't even have to suggest reimbursement when they make a mistake. I've been with them for 8 years because everyone I know who has a different provide complains about customer service, dropped calls, coverage sucking. Pay 10-15$ more a month to not have to deal with that? Duh! 8 years and absolutely no complaints! :)

Talked with several Verizon Reps., in store and on the phone, over the past three weeks. They claim they have no clue on when any phones will be in stock, or why. On October 14th I talked to a Rep on the phone and he called a local store, who told him they would have the phones in stores for the first time on Oct. 20th and expected the phones to be in stock on the web at the same time. On October 24th I stopped at a mall store, who said the store release date was canceled and doubled checked and found no inventory in the entire state. Saw a couple of review posts on verizons site posted this week so called some out of state stores and found nothing. Talked to the northeaster call center rep yesterday, Oct. 28th and they varified no phones in inventory anywhere and no info on suspected inventory. Basically said keep an eye on the website. Verizon has not given any info about future inventory, explanation for lack of inventory, or even if they plan on dropping the phone all together. I did get that Verizons transiever is different somehow from its compitition, so purchasing one from a competitor, T-mobile, who may have them in stock and then activating it on the verizon network, even after a software/firmware flash, won't work.

Talked with several Verizon reps - they have no clue..... yeah. Surprising

I just ordered one over the phone with verizon. The web site says out of stock but if you call, their system shows "low stock." I will have it in two days. Also, ordering over the phone does not allow instant rebate, you have to settle for a mail in rebate, but the final cost is the same. AND, get this, for having to mail in the rebate, the rep offered, without my asking, a 10% rate cut off my total service for the next six months. WOW, talk about great service. ATT sucks, sprint is okay, but none of them touch verizon's customer service!!!

back in stock today, just ordered mine
