Verizon: 1M BlackBerry Storms sold

Tools

Verizon Wireless says it sold 1 million Research In Motion BlackBerry Storm touchscreen devices since it launched Nov. 21.

When the carrier announced its forth quarter earnings yesterday there was no mention of the number of units it had sold in the fourth quarter. Verizon, which is the sole U.S. carrier for the device, only indicated that sales of the device were strong. However, in a ComputerWorld.com report, a Verizon spokeswoman confirmed that the company had sold 1 million units of the device through January.

The Verizon spokeswoman said "that's not a bumpy start," in response to a report in The Wall Street Journal that had characterized the launch of the Storm as "bumpy," filled with technical glitches that arose from the pressure to get the device onto the market for the holiday shopping season. In that report, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that such problems were a "new reality" for device launches like the Storm.

The BlackBerry Storm is the worst phone I ever used. I had it little over a month and within that time the Storm had reboothed itself like ten times and I keep getting a java null exception error. I took the phone to the Verizon store in the Queens Planza mall. The tech did some work ont he phone, by the time I walked away from her counter the phone had already freeze up on me. I took it back to the tech and told her the dumb phone is not working. She told me the phone is working fine and that I should remove the battery and restart it. I was seriously pissed off. I wish I can dump the blackberry storm for a regular phone with a keypad. I will never buy a Blackberry phone again.

I am also very disappointed with the STORM. The browsing experience has been very poor. And lot of bugs in the software as well.

Agreed. buggy software. Brought to the market before the bugs were worked out. I returned my Stormy and went back to me Curve.

Starting to wonder if we can trust RIMM. Options back dating and now the Stormy.

It is not solely RIM to blame...they make solid devices (you do not hear anywhere near as many complaints about the Blackberry Bold). It's the fact that they and Verizon got vindictive and tried to get revenge against Apple and AT&T for developing and selling the "killer app" for the cellular world. Goes to show you, when you act on impulse, people can see the results. Besides, Verizon had their chance at the iPhone. Way to drop the ball...twice.

I wouldnt use the storm as a reason to stop buying RIM products. The curves and the Bold are great devices with excellent battery life, solid form factor, expandable memories, sweet OS, and a very capable web browser. that being said, the storm is a big dissapointment, maybe the next version will make up for this ones failures.

I have always had Verizon for voice. When the Bold came out with AT&T, I knew we were a perfect match even though I knew Verizon was coming out with the Storm. Touch screen does not appeal to me and neither does reading all the negative reviews about it. I played with one at the mall and was not impressed at all. I laughed and walked away after two minutes of using it. It wasn’t out of frustration or my inability to adapt to new technology, the whole experience just didn’t feel right. I am glad I went with the Bold but still enjoy Verizon for my voice service. I am in CT so I have good signal all the time from both services. I will not say one service is better over the other as I use each for two different reasons. I would like to know how many Storms were returned within the 30 day trial period ;) -INK

I sent mine back before the 30 days was up. Didn't have any trouble with bugs at all but just couldn't adapt to the landscape keyboard. The keys light up when you hover over them but when you press down with your thumb, your thumb covers up the lit key and would end up typing another adjacent key without being to see that another key lit up. And when you make typos, the method of highlighting the wrong key to correct is very, very difficult to use. Went back to my wonderful Curve.

I've had my Storm for over a month now. My son bought an iphone and I really liked it but don't like ATT coverage. So I purchased the Storm and am very happy with it. Good response with 3G network, browser is quick after a few tweaks. No problems with reboots or crashes. Screen on Storm is much brighter and easier to read than iphone. Certainly differences in interface but once interface is mastered, both are very easy to manuver. I do wish there were a few more apps for Storm even though most of the apps for iphone are cute but mostly impracticle.

I am the unfortunate owner of a new BB Storm on Verizon. I waited 5-months before buying it because I had a negative experience w/ the LG Chocolate 1, so wanted to wait for the bugs to be resolved...well, unfortunately, they are not.

The phone freezes when I take pictures and reboots. The appearance and design is sweet, not really a fan of the SurePress system, but I can kind of see the benefits, but with all it's amazing features the device bites. I LOVE my BBs, but the Storm is a disappointment.

Perhaps the Storm 2 will fix the majority of the reboot and goofy quirks because this device would be amazing. I will opt go back to my BB Pearl until the unofficial Storm 2 is released.

SPECIAL MESSAGE for VERIZON & RIM - Great concept, great look, poor QA.
