Virgin Mobile announces plans for India launch

While the MVNO business model still runs counter to regulations, a report in the Times of India claims Virgin Mobile is sussing out a deal with Tata Teleservices to launch its Virgin branded mobile service in that country. To circumvent the MVNO regulation, the report claims Virgin and Tata will create a new entity largely owned by Tata. Neither company has commented on the deal. The arrangement aims to boost Tata's mass-market appeal with the niche marketing toward youth a Virgin branded service could offer. The market has long known that Richard Branson has his eyes on India--in 2005 he launched his airline's services there.
