After eclipsing 18 million users on Android alone, the Weather Channel app was overdue for a refresh. "We knew we didn't have the product we wanted in the marketplace, so I challenged my team to re-imagine our Android experience, to make it new and make it top of the line," explained Cameron Clayton, president of the Weather Company's digital division. The Weather Channel App 4.0.1, the app's first update since 2009, incorporates social media sharing, localized maps, more detailed forecasts and videos, as well as specialized phone backgrounds that change according to current weather conditions. The app, which remains free, was launched in partnership with sponsor, Toyota. FierceDeveloper contributor Jason Ankeny spoke with Clayton about working with Android, reconceptualizing mobile ads and the app's new TruPoint technology. Article
