Not everyone will embrace T-Mobile's decision to do away with device subsidies. But I'm glad T-Mobile is making the switch, and at CES many industry players seem to agree.
The Consumer Electronics Show here was surprisingly quiet on the smartphone front. While there were a number of smartphone announcements, the overall noise level seemed less than in prior years.
LAS VEGAS--Verizon Wireless said that almost 50 percent of its data load now travels over its LTE network. The figure is up significantly from October, when Verizon said that 35 percent of its data traffic moved over its LTE network. Further, the carrier said it expects overall data traffic to grow by a factor of seven during the next three years.
LAS VEGAS--Samsung's Stephen Woo, president of the company's components business, showed off a prototype smartphone with a flexible display here at the Consumer Electronics Show. While the company and others have long been working on such technology, the demonstration--during a high-profile keynote address--indicates the technology is inching closer to commercial reality.
LAS VEGAS--MVNO FreedomPop said its WiMAX-capable iPhone Sleeve has been delayed in the FCC's approval process due to an untested design element. The company said the unexpected delay in obtaining approval has cost the company and its manufacturing partner a total of $550,000 so far.
