Researchers at the Central Intelligence Agency have spent years trying to crack the security and encryption technology of Apple iPhones and iPads as part of an effort remotely steal information off of those devices, according to a report from The Intercept.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company's blockbuster holiday quarter proved that the company did not need to make a cheaper iPhone in order to continue to grow its smartphone business. He reiterated that Apple will not make a less expensive iPhone for the sake of making one, and will continue to focus on making great products.
Apple posted a blowout holiday quarter with sales of 74.5 million iPhones and $18 billion in net profit. The results were way above forecasts from most Wall Street analysts. "We'd like to thank our customers for an incredible quarter, which saw demand for Apple products soar to an all-time high," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "Our revenue grew 30 percent over last year to $74.6 billion, and the execution by our teams to achieve these results was simply phenomenal."
According to a new Reuters report, Apple is hiring a dedicated sales force and working with application developers in the area, an effort by the company to ratchet up its push into the mobile enterprise market following a deal in July with corporate powerhouse IBM.
Microsoft is going to let users create and edit Office content on iPhones, iPads, and soon Android tablets using Office apps without an Office 365 subscription. It's another example of Microsoft choosing to forgo some revenue in order to get its software on more devices.
HALF MOON BAY, Calif.--Apple decided to put its Apple SIM card inside its new iPads because it didn't know which wireless carriers its customers would choose and because the company wanted to give its customers more choice, according to an Apple executive.
Although the new Apple SIM card for its new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 promises to let customers switch between different carriers' service plans on the tablets, there are a number of caveats to the service that have recently come to light. Most notably, AT&T Mobility confirmed that if customers purchase an iPad with the new Apple SIM card and activate cellular service via AT&T, the Apple SIM card will be locked to AT&T's network and customers will need to purchase a new SIM to activate the device on another carrier.
AT&T Mobility, Sprint, T-Mobile US and UK operator EE support a new SIM card for Apple's iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 that lets customers switch between carriers. Although Verizon Wireless will provide wireless service for Apple's new tablets, it is not listed as a supporter of the new Apple SIM card.
Apple introduced two new iPad tablets, the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, as it seeks to regain momentum in the tablet market and fight back against new phablets and cheaper competing tablets from rivals.
Apple is hosting a media event at 1 p.m. Eastern Time today at its headquarters in Cupertino Calif., where it is expected to unveil new faster, thinner iPad tablets. A key question though is whether that will be enough to revive Apple's growth in the tablet market.
