Another research firm, this time the NPD Group, has predicted that shipments of smartphones will overtake those of basic and feature phones for the first time this year, as adoption of smartphones accelerates.

FierceWireless compiled a list highlighting the smartphones and tablets that the Tier 1 carriers are promoting during the holidays. This list is not comprehensive, but designed to give you a cross-section of the top devices that carriers are heavily promoting, and in some cases discounting to consumers.

Annual smartphone shipments around the globe are expected to nearly double by 2016 to reach more than 1 billion, according to a new report from NPD DisplaySearch, a unit of research firm NPD Group.

The connected TV is starting to make inroads into the worldwide consumer space, but it's still far from the vehicle of choice for watching online video, according to information gleaned by NPD DisplaySearch's "Connected TV Study: Features, Content and Usage."
