Vodafone Group plc is a global mobile communications company based in London, U.K., which sells a variety of handsets and voice, messaging and data services. Vodafone operates in over 30 countries and 40 partner markets worldwide. Prior to July 2000, Vodafone Group was known as Vodafone AirTouch. Vodafone Group is the largest mobile telecommunications company worldwide and has the seconded largest number of subscribers, second to China Mobile. Vodafone owns a 45 percent stake in U.S. mobile company Verizon Wireless. Vodafone’s most popular mobile phones include the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc, BlackBerry Torch, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, Nexus S Black and BlackBerry Curve. In July 2009, Vodafone Australia merged with Hutchison 3G to form a 50:50 joint venture. In February 2010, Vodafone launched the Vodafone 150 and Vodafone 250, selling for £10 and £18. These basic phones are targeted at developing nations and were originally released in India, Turkey, and eight African countries. In March 2011, Vodafone agreed to pay 120 million to acquire Macintosh Retail Group NV’s BelCompany telecommunications stores.
