Weather Channel Goes Direct With Video

The Weather Channel is teaming with Vantrix to launch a new mobile video application through the Weather Channel mobile Website. Unlike its on-portal video offered through wireless operators, this service will allow users access to video forecasts, travel weather reports and other weather-related news stories off deck. Initially the service will be available in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta. By year-end it will be available in 100 cities.

To access the service, users need an embedded player on their handset. Vantrix’s service can automatically determine whether a user has an appropriate handset. According to Traci Van Deventer, director, mobile products at The Weather Channel Interactive, this is the first direct-to-consumer video play for the company. The service is ad-supported and free to the end user.

Louis Gump, vice president of mobile for The Weather Channel Interactive, said this service may help drive more video on the mobile Web because consumers will see the value and relevance in mobile video. “Consumer awareness is still a big barrier,” Gump says.

Google launches AdSense for Mobile

Google has officially launched their Google AdSense for Mobile (pic) allowing AdSense partners with mobile sites to add contextual advertising to their sites. Just like its web version, the system crawls mobile website content and places ads based on the content on the site. Website owners will earn money with each visitor click.

Google has rolled the service out in the U.S., England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Russia, Netherlands, Australia, India and China. Japan's AdSense will be ready in a few more weeks.

This is just the latest in Google's string of mobile moves. Last week, Google launched Adwords on their mobile search while spending the weeks previous hinting at the launch of the much anticipated gPhone.

Prexar snags Amp'd assets

Unheralded wireless provider Prexar Mobile announced it signed a definitive agreement to acquire the strategic assets of ill-fated MVNO Amp'd Mobile, promising uninterrupted service for Amp'd customers who transition to the Prexar service. Financial details were not disclosed and it's unclear what assets Prexar acquired beyond access to Amp'd subscribers.

According to Prexar Mobile, Amp'd subscribers who move to the Prexar network can for the most part continue using their existing mobile handsets, and have their choice from a suite of calling and text messaging plan options. Amp'd subscribers must visit the Prexar Mobile website to initiate the transition process or obtain additional information.

Prexar is only offering subscribers postpaid rate plans, however the company says that it plans to offer prepaid plans and is working to get prepaid capability. For now, Amp'd subs can move to Prexar on a month-by-month basis. The only requirement is that they pay the first month in advance.

Prexar Mobile is managed by CLEC USA Telephone, which launched local and long-distance voice services in 1999. USA Telephone CEO Bill Fogg told FierceWireless in an interview this morning that the company has been developing its wireless brand since last September and decided that the Amp'd opportunity was too good to pass up. "We are working jointly with Amp'd on marketing updates. The primary assets for Amp'd was its customers," Fogg says.

Fogg says that Prexar has about 16,000 cellular phone customers and about 8,000 RIM Blackberry users. He said that the company has been experimenting with bundled packages and resells service on a variety of wireless carrier networks.ÂÂ
