Apple sells 6.9M iPhones in Q4

Apple, in announcing its fourth quarter earnings, said that it had sold 6.9 million iPhones in the quarter, and was poised to have 200 million downloads from its App Store.

The iPhone number is just one of the major headline statistics in what was a monster quarter for the California computer maker. The phone, which is subsidized by AT&T Mobility and runs on its 3G HSPA network, has been a huge seller for the company, and the 6.9 million units sold compares to 1.1 million units in the year-ago period. Apple launched the iPhone 3G in early July. The company saw its net profit for the period ending Sept. 27 surge 26 percent to $1.14 billion.

In announcing the news, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the company would pass the 200 million mark for the number of applications sold in its App Store, which launched the iPhone 3G.

He also added some bluster during a call with investors when he claimed that Apple had sold more devices in the quarter than Research in Motion, the Canadian BlackBerry-maker. RIM has not yet released its numbers for the current quarter.

For more:
-see this WSJ article (sub. req.)
-see this MacWorld article
-see this Telecoms.com article

1. Steve Jobs, CEO, Apple

What makes him powerful: Steve Jobs' ascent to the top of the wireless heap mirrors a massive paradigm shift in the structure of the industry itself. The 2007 introduction of Apple's iPhone rewrote the rules that long governed the wireless marketplace, wresting absolute power away from operators while illustrating to consumers the full technological promise of the mobile platform. A year later, Jobs and company did it again, debuting the next-generation iPhone 3G and its accompanying virtual storefront the App Store, a move that revolutionized the distribution and sale of mobile software. Not just a personal technology visionary but by all accounts a canny and ruthless negotiator as well, Jobs is above all a merchant of cool, spearheading a series of trailblazing gadgets that emerged as must-have accessories for urban hipsters and soccer moms alike.

A college dropout who co-founded Apple in 1976, Jobs established his company's reputation by bringing to market devices that emphasized elegance and simplicity in both their user interfaces and product designs: Apple's Macintosh is generally considered the first user-friendly PC. But the computing giant enjoyed even greater cultural influence with its iPod portable music device--Apple has sold more than 153 million iPods since the device's introduction in October 2001, accounting for roughly 70 percent of the portable media player market according to research firm the NPD Group. The iTunes digital music store, opened in April 2003, has since sold more than 5 billion songs, becoming the world's premier website for legal premium downloads as well as the biggest-selling music retailer in the U.S.

For the iPhone--the product of a reported $150 million development cycle--Jobs cut an unprecedented five-year, exclusive revenue-sharing partnership with U.S. mobile operator AT&T that granted Apple $3 per month (over the life of a 24-month contract) for every iPhone customer already with AT&T and $11 per month for every new subscriber, at least according to a Piper Jaffray estimate. Never before had a device manufacturer demanded and won the concessions awarded to Apple in its negotiations with AT&T, but the iPhone lived up to the hype, selling close to 2 million units in its first six months on the market and winning Invention of the Year honors from Time Magazine.

Most of all, the iPhone and its signature touchscreen introduced to consumers an intuitive, immersive user experience that realized the true potential and scope of mobile data services. According to AT&T president and CEO Ralph de la Vega, more than 95 percent of iPhone owners regularly surf the mobile web. The App Store, launched in mid-2008, is no less a game-changer: Within its first month alone, consumers downloaded more than 60 million iPhone and iPod touch applications, a $21 million windfall for applications developers. No wonder the mobile industry can't wait to see what Jobs does next.

iPhone App Store generated $30M in a month

Apple's iPhone App Store is being heralded as a big success with the Wall Street Journal reporting today that in its first month users downloaded more than 60 million applications generating an average of $1 million a day for a total of $30 million for the month. If sales stay the pace, Apple will reap about $360 million a year in new revenue from the App Store.

However, Apple may not derive a lot of profit from the store. CEO Steve Jobs says that the company keeps 30 percent of the proceeds--enough to cover the expenses--with the remaining 70 percent going to the software app developers. But Jobs believes that the applications will help sell more iPhones, just as the music sold through Apple iTunes has made iPods more desirable.

Apple CEO: iPhone represents launch of personal computer

When Apple puts the iPhone 3G on sale tomorrow it will simultaneously open its online App Store, which is akin to Apples iTunes Store for music. The App Store will sell mobile applications such as games, reference guides and other software. For Apple, the move represents an ambitious effort to turn the iPhone into more of a personal computer.

"There's been nothing on a mobile phone a fraction as good as what's on PCs," Apple CEO Steve Jobs told The Wall Street Journal. He also said that the iPhone represents a rare launch of a new computing platform.

Of course, rivals such as Microsoft take umbrage to a remark like that. Microsoft says it has developers who have created more than 18,000 applications for handsets using Windows Mobile operating systems. Still, the level of interest in making software for the iPhone is what Gartner Group's Ken Dulaney characterizes as "white hot." A handful of startups have entered the mobile market with the purpose of making applications for the iPhone, and we could see more.

In an interview with The New York Times, Jobs said the App Store will initially feature more than 500 applications including educational programs, mobile commerce and business productivity tools, with games representing about a third of the first-wave apps. According to Jobs, 25 percent of the first 500 applications at the store will be free, with roughly 90 percent of the premium applications priced at $9.99 or less. Jobs insists Apple will not rely on the App Store as a source of significant revenue, in much the same way iTunes music sales have contributed little to the firm's bottom line: "We are not trying to be business partners," he said. The goal is to "sell more iPhones."

Rogers changes iPhone pricing amid consumer complaints

Rogers Communications gave in to all of those angry Canadians--sort of. The company announced yesterday that it would alter its data pricing plans that outraged thousands of Canadian consumers so much that they signed an open letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking him to use his influence and do something about Rogers' price gouging.

Rogers has lowered its per month pricing plan for data access, which has been a major gripe of Canadian consumers. Plans now start at $30 per month for 6 gigabytes of data transmission. For some, however, it's not enough, especially given the fact that Rogers is only offering such pricing until Aug. 31.

Late last month, Rogers said that customers who purchase the 3G iPhone would have to sign a mandatory three-year contract and the company would cap data usage at 750 MB. Although both AT&T and Rogers were offering calling, data and text messaging for $75 a month, Rogers at that price gave Canadians a third less calling time, half as many text messages and put that cap on 3G data usage that included steep fees for users who go over their monthly limit.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Rogers said that it initially didn't have a lot of information about how customers wanted to use the new 3G iPhone. As that information became available, it became clear that customers were eager to use the device's data capabilities to the fullest potential, so it responded with yesterday's price change. RCR Wireless News, however, reported that Apple had responded to consumer complaints by pulling devices and not allowing Canadian Apple Retail stores to sell the new iPhone.

For more:
- check out The Wall Street Journal (sub. req.)
- read RCR Wireless News

Chronicling the humiliation and anger induced by the iPhone 3G

With the iPhone 3G scheduled to land in consumers' hands nearly simultaneously around the world on Friday, it has been interesting to see the range of emotions, from anger to humiliation, the iconic device has induced since Apple's announcement of it last month.

3 Australia has been downright humiliated by the device, or one could argue that 3 humiliated itself. Its competitors Optus, Telstra and Vodafone will all launch the iPhone 3G later this month, while 3 was left out of the fray. Instead of touting its own strengths, however, 3 opted to point out to its customers that it doesn't have the one thing its customers want. In fact, 3 is appealing to its customers to petition Apple to allow it to distribute the iPhone 3G. To make itself feel even worse, 3 asked its customers to send their thoughts about 3 and the iPhone. It received about 3,500 messages. And Noel Hamill, director Sales, marketing and product with 3 reiterated on the company's website 3's efforts to get the iPhone 3G, but indicated that "for those of you who can't wait, I respect your call and thank you for being with 3 until now. I also hope you return at some point." What sort of marketing tactic do you suppose that is? The please-feel-sorry-for-us-and-don't-leave marketing tactic? Then again, the iPhone makes one do strange things, like waste one's life for a week to stand in line for one.

Meanwhile, Canadians are outraged over the Rogers Wireless 3G iPhone rate structure and are petitioning Apple CEO Steve Jobs over the deal. Some 30,000 Canadians have signed an open letter to Steve. Late last month, Rogers said that customers who purchase the 3G iPhone would have to sign a mandatory three-year contract and the company will cap data usage at 750 MB. Although both AT&T and Rogers offer calling, data and text messaging for $75 a month, Rogers at that price gives Canadians a third less calling time, half as many text messages, and puts a 750 MB cap on 3G data usage--with steep fees for users who go over their monthly limit. That much hatred isn't likely to change Rogers' pricing practices, however, as it is the only operator in Canada that offers GSM/WCDMA, and hence, the only operator in Canada that will offer the iPhone 3G. And while Canadian consumers talk the good talk, you have to wonder if they can really stay away in droves from the iconic device. As I said, the iPhone makes one do strange things, like pay through the nose to an operator one professes to hate.

Of course, it's interesting to see the blatant dichotomy here. 3 is desperate and apologetic to its customers since it doesn't have the iPhone 3G while Rogers shrugs its shoulders and thumbs its nose at its customers because it's the only player in town with the device. And with a pan-European rollout (12 European markets are launching the device), operators there are actually stripping the iPhone of its current "elite" device status, notes Emma Mohr-McClune, principal analyst with Current Analysis. She notes that the new iPhone 3G will be treated to standard, mass-market pricing and promotion practices, including heavily subsidized devices and prepaid promotions.

Still, Mohr-McClune says such a move will make the iPhone 3G a greater threat in Europe--causing more humiliation and anger for all of those operators and handset players desperately trying to compete with the device. --Lynnette

Apple's 3G iPhone continues to drum up controversy and incite rumors. Here's a roundup of some of the latest tantalizing iPhone tidbits that are circulating:

* Will the 3G iPhone be distributed at retailers such as Best Buy and RadioShack? When the original iPhone was launched last year, consumers could only purchase it online or at AT&T company-owned stores or Apple stores. But rumors are circulating that the 3G iPhone may be available at both Best Buy and RadioShack stores. Story

* Canadians are outraged over the Rogers Wireless 3G iPhone rate structure and are petitioning Apple CEO Steve Jobs over the deal. On Friday, Rogers said that customers who purchase the 3G iPhone would have to sign a mandatory three-year contract and the company will cap data usage at 750 MB with high fees for users who go over their monthly limit. Story

* RBC Analyst Mike Abramsky says that there is "unprecedented demand" for the 3G iPhone. RBC's research indicates that 55 percent of those planning to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days will purchase an iPhone, up from 35 percent in March. Story

AT&T will subsidize 3G iPhone

AT&T confirmed it will subsidize Apple's 3G iPhone to customers who sign a two-year contract for the phone. AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega told the WSJ that the company believes the $199 price point is necessary to drive mass market adoption. While he admits that the subsidy will negatively impact the company's earnings in the short term (2008 and 2009), he believes the long-term rewards will make up for the initial hit. Specifically, he expects the operator to see a significant uptick in data usage and a reduction in churn. Some analysts estimate that AT&T will be paying as much as $499 per iPhone. The company plans to make up for some of that cost by charging consumers a higher monthly fee for the unlimited data plan. AT&T currently charges $20 per month but with the new iPhone it will charge $30 per month. Of course, the new 3G iPhone users will get the advantage of faster data because they will be using AT&T's HSPA 3G data service instead of the slower EDGE service.

- Don't forget to check out our photo slideshow...

Here's a rundown of other iPhone details:

iPhone launch: It will make its commercial debut July 11 in 22 countries. The 8 GB 3G iPhone will be priced at $199, the 16 GB device will cost $299. The new device will come with GPS, iPhone 2.0 software and WiFi. It also sports a battery life of 5 hours of 3G talk time and 300 hours of standby time.

iPhone metrics: Apple CEO Steve Jobs told attendees at yesterday's Worldwide Developers Conference that Apple sold 6 million iPhones in the first year and that the company ran out of the current generation of devices several weeks ago. The device has 90 percent customer satisfaction. In addition, 98 percent of users are browsing online, 94 percent are using email and 90 percent are texting. Approximately 80 percent are using 10 or more of the phone's features.

Special features: The 3G iPhone enables simultaneous voice and data communications and features a wealth of enterprise applications, including support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync for over-the-air push email, contact and calendar syncing, not to mention remote wipe and Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to corporate networks.

MobileMe: Apple introduced MobileMe, a new Internet service delivering push email, push contacts and push calendars to native iPhone, iPod touch, Mac and PC applications. MobileMe also provides a suite of ad-free web applications promising a desktop-quality experience through any modern browser--applications include Gallery for viewing and sharing photos and iDisk for storing and exchanging documents online. MobileMe includes 20 GB of online storage that can be used for email, contacts, calendar, photos, movies and documents. The subscription-based service costs $99 per year for individuals and $149 annually for a Family Pack, which includes one master account with 20 GB of storage and four Family Member accounts with 5 GB of storage each.

Anticipation is building for today's expected debut of the 3G iPhone during Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco. Hundreds of third-party developers are eagerly awaiting the device's launch so that they can finally start selling their apps.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to disclose more details on how developers can sell their apps via Apple's new App Store when he takes the stage today, but many developers expect it will be a few more weeks before they can actually start selling their wares. Many are anticipating that the new device will have GPS, which could be a boon for new location-based services and advertising applications.

3G iPhone Watch: AT&T discourages vacations

According to an internal AT&T memo that Boy Genius Report obtained, the carrier is making very similar preparations for "an exciting new promotion/product launch" right around the one year anniversary of the iPhone in June. AT&T sent a memo to employees discouraging them from taking vacations between June 15 and July 15. The 3G version of the iPhone is expected to launch during that period and AT&T said it expects "heavier than normal customer traffic" in its stores during those four weeks. The memo, however, does not specifically announce the coming of a 3G iPhone. The iPhone 2.0 software is also set to launch this summer and the company believes the new software will make the iPhone more appealing to the enterprise.

Many industry pundits expect a 3G iPhone announcement during Apple's World Wide Developer's Conference, which starts on Monday, June 9th. Apple CEO Steve Jobs usually delivers his keynote on Tuesday mornings (incidentally, Apple also tends to announce and release new products on Tuesdays).

For more:
- read this report from BGR

Brace yourself. Round two of the iPhone hype is coming

Brace yourself. Round two of the iPhone hype is coming

Much to the chagrin of operators and mobile-phone vendors, it appears the hype surrounding the iPhone will be repeating itself this summer. Analysts are expecting Apple CEO Steve Jobs to unveil the 3G iPhone at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which begins June 9. It will be another summer dominated by Apple and AT&T, which, by the way, reported average iPhone ARPUs are in the mid to upper $90 range.

That means the clock is ticking for all of those iPhone competitors coming to market. Sprint is planning to launch the touchscreen Samsung Instinct in June with a marketing campaign surrounding the launch that will be one of the biggest campaigns the operator has ever had. It's clear Sprint is banking its success in devices on the Instinct, but the device still has a few bugs to work out before the summer and the carrier has yet to announce a price point.

And Nokia has unveiled its answer to the iPhone: a touchscreen handset that is both Java and Flash-enabled and currently code-named Tube. While the handset maker has not disclosed any details about the timing of the launch of the device, reports claim the company plans to launch it before the 3G iPhone drops.

Evidently AT&T is delaying the launch of RIM's long-awaited 3G BlackBerry Curve handset until August because of concerns stemming from a technical glitch. The device was supposed to launch in June.

If this latest rumor is true, and Apple announces the 3G iPhone in early June, then these competitors only have a narrow window of opportunity to get their message out there before all consumers and columnists talk about is the new-and-improved iPhone. Granted, I've said before that iPhone competitors will have a difficult time competing with the iconic device itself, but that doesn't mean these companies aren't creating a market vibrant with competition. However, even that effect and possibly millions in marketing dollars could be washed away if these competitors look to launch their marketing campaigns head-to-head with the second round of the iPhone hype. -Lynnette

De la Vega: AT&T coming around on Android?

At a press luncheon yesterday AT&T Mobility president Ralph de la Vega hinted that AT&T was finally coming around to Google's Android platform after meeting with Google recently.

"I like it a lot more than I did before," de la Vega said at a press luncheon here at CTIA Wireless. "One of the things we were looking for is whether it was open and you could really put other apps on it." He said the platform "is something that we would want in our portfolio" but first we "need to get it into our devices and really test it."

The Mobility president also fanned the flames of the long-awaited 3G iPhone, which both he and Apple CEO Steve Jobs have admitted was coming out by the end of 2008. When pressed, de la Vega said most of the carrier's high-end devices will be 3G-enabled "within months." Despite the hype on the blogs, the end of 2008 is "within months" too. -Brian

Apple: SDK, iPhone games and Exchange support

As expected, Apple released its iPhone software development kit Thursday--the SDK is available for download now at developer.apple.com. Apple also touted a June software update that will enable a series of new iPhone games capitalizing on the device's touchscreen and motion-sensing capabilities as well as the addition of Microsoft Exchange, which promises users access to email, calendars and other enterprise tools. All upgrades are tied to Apple's stated goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of the year--according to CEO Steve Jobs, the device already boasts a 28 percent smartphone marketshare, behind BlackBerry maker Research In Motion at 41 percent.

While Apple will make the iPhone SDK available for free, developers must also join Apple's developer program for $99 to secure distribution for their applications via the App Store, a new application the computing giant will embed on all iPhones. The App Store will deliver all iPhone applications, both free and premium, and will serve as the exclusive platform for iPhone app distribution. Apple will also create a section of its iTunes digital storefront where users may browse available iPhone apps. According to Apple, developers will name the price of their premium applications, with Apple taking 30 percent of revenues off the top "to pay for running the App Store." -Jason

Apple also announced its enterprise strategy for the iPhone and the biggest surprise is that the company is licensing Activesync from Microsoft and bringing full Exchange Server support to the device. Exchange support will be baked into the iPhone's native Mail, Calendar and Contact applications and Exchange sync can be toggled on and off for each of them. But that's not all: the iPhone is also getting push email/calendar/contacts for the rest of us, support for certificates, identities, Cisco IPsec VPN and WPA2/802.1x and tools for remote security administration, device configuration and even remote wipe capabilities. All of these features will arrive with version 2.0 of the iPhone firmware, which is scheduled to arrive in June. -Mehan

Analyst: Infineon-powered 3G iPhone by June?

According to a research note from UBS analysts, Apple will launch a 3G iPhone by mid-year that will probably be powered by an Infineon Technologies' chip. Both Apple CEO Steve Jobs and AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega have said that a 3G iPhone would launch by the end of 2008. UBS also noted that production of EDGE-based iPhones will begin to ramp down by mid-year. The analysts wrote that both O2 in the U.K. and AT&T in the U.S. have urged Apple to release a 3G version of the handset during the summer.

Report: iPhone SDK delayed

According to a report from BusinessWeek, Apple may not make its February deadline for releasing the software development kit for the iPhone. The company had originally promised to make the SDK available by the end of this month but BusinessWeek claims it could be delayed by one to three weeks.

In an open letter to developers last October, Apple CEO Steve Jobs promised developers that the SDK would be available this month: "It will take until February to release an SDK because we're trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once--provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc.," he wrote.

Earlier this month, Wired reported that Apple could use iTunes to distribute the SDK. Some developers felt like making their software available on iTunes will put Apple in control of the pricing. However, others are excited about the number of possible consumers that will have access to their software.

Of course, two blogs have reportedly leaked the secret iPhone SDK already: AustinHeap.com and Zibri's Blog. So the impatient can find the purported leaked key here while the rest of us wait.

For more on the SDK:
- read this post from BusinessWeek

According to a recent report from Canalys, Apple's iPhone is the third-best selling smartphone in the world. The iPhone had a 6.5 percent market share worldwide during the fourth quarter, according to the report. Nokia's smartphone portfolio has a 53 percent market share while Research In Motion claims about 11.4 percent. While Canalys does not specifically define "smartphone" in its press release, it notes that the market was comprised of about 35.5 million devices in the previous quarter, a little over 10 percent of the overall 300 million mobile handsets shipped during that period. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has said he'd like to attain 1 percent of the overall mobile phone market.

The MacBook Air may have stolen the show at this year's MacWorld Expo but Apple CEO Steve Jobs' keynote did include two wireless-related products and announcements:

Time Capsule: Essentially an 802.11n Airport Extreme base station combined with a 500GB or 1TB hard drive. Indented for laptop users who want wireless backups via Time Machine. $299 and $499, respectively.

iPhone v1.1.3 firmware: As expected, here's the new iPhone firmware. Google Maps with My Location (faux GPS), a customizable home screen, multiple-recipient SMS messages, support for chapters, subtitles and languages in videos and more. Look at those home screen icons jiggle!

Jobs also noted that the Apple has sold more than 4 million iPhones worldwide.

For more on the keynote:
- read the full write up over at DailyTechRag
- read this piece on the MacBook Air too
