Sony Ericsson is set to debut its Project Capuchin, which will allow developers to create applications for mobile phones that make use of both Java ME and Adobe's Flash Lite. Sony Ericsson will unveil a set of APIs and an SDK in the second half of this year for developers. The new platform would allow developers to use Flash Lite for menus while making use of Java's slick 3D graphics, for example.

Apple sold 1.7 million iPhones during its second quarter, up from first quarter shipments of 1.1 million units. Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the company is still committed to reaching 10 million iPhones sold during 2008. The iPhone sales brought in $378 million in revenue for the quarter, which saw iPhone sales beginning in both Austria and Ireland. Apple also noted that 200,000 developers have downloaded its SDK and about one-third of the Fortune 500 has asked about iPhone applications.

Apple has agreed to buy a boutique microprocessor company named PA Semi for a rumored pricetag of $278 million. PA Semi is known for its low-power, sophisticated chipsets, which according to Forbes, could mean big things for the iPhone and future iPods. The deal is a particular slap in the face for Intel, which has been courting Apple for some time. PA Semi has 150 employees and counts NEC as one of its key customers. Apple is planning to supply existing customers for the foreseeable future but some insiders told Forbes the plan is to bring PA Semi's wares exclusively in-house at some point.

Google gives more color on Android vision

Google developer Dan Morrill shared some insight yesterday at the ETech conference on the company's vision for its newly released Android platform. Morrill said that Google does not view making money off of Android as a "high priority," because Android is about getting an open platform into the wild. Morrill also noted that Google does not consider the SDK for the OS as in Beta or even Alpha release. Morrill also addressed fears that Android would expose users to more malware and phishing programs than traditional mobile devices do because Android aims to create a more web-like experience and web-like risk level is sure to follow.
