Orange inks iPhone deals for EMEA

French telecom Orange has inked a deal with Apple for iPhone carriage in countries throughout the Middle East, Africa and a number of European countries. The carrier issued a one sentence press release that disclosed deals for iPhone carriage in: Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and various African markets later in 2008. No word on whether the deals will be exclusive to Orange, as has been the case with most iPhone deals, or whether there will be more than one carrier in some of the markets, like in Italy. Article

According to a survey conducted by Habbo across 31 countries, most teenagers agree that Nokia is the No. 1 mobile phone brand worldwide, but since the autumn of 2006 Samsung and Sony Ericsson have ranked higher than Nokia in markets like the U.K., Switzerland, Denmark and Germany. Article

Analyst: Apple lost $400M from unlocked phones

According to Berstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi, Apple lost up to $400 million in future revenue and profit from the 300,000 to 400,000 unlocked iPhones.

Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital Markets, estimated that 25 percent to 30 percent of iPhones are now unlocked but noted that the handsets may be "a headache for carriers, [they] are financially positive for Apple, and in our view bode well for global iPhone demand, and for Apple exceeding its 10 million, 18-month target."

Of course, last March, Harvard Business School professor David Yoffie estimated that Apple generated $400 million in free publicity for its iPhone prior to its launch. So, let's call it even.
