Rogers will sell HSPA version of HTC Shift

Canadian operator Rogers Wireless will begin selling the HSPA version of the HTC Shift X9501 device. The Shift, known as a "data powerhouse" is available for $1,599.99 with a three-year contract and a minimum data plan of $50 per month.

The Shift is powered by Windows Vista and offers push email. The smartphone has multimedia capability and uses Windows Media Player 11 to give subscribers access to music, video and photos. It features a 7-inch touchscreen and a 40 gigabyte hard drive.

Rogers says that within three months it will offer a software upgrade to HTC Shift users that will provide TeleNav LBS capabilities.

Report: 550M GPS phones by 2012

According to a recent report from ABI Research, more than 550 million GPS-enabled handsets will ship by 2012. The research outfit notes the ubiquity of personal navigation services from carriers, but also points out other location-based services like friend finders, local search, geo-tagged photos and sharing points-of-interest via geo-tagging as up-and-coming applications of GPS technology in phones.

"While most CDMA handsets are already GPS-enabled and GPS is set to become a standard feature in GSM smartphones, GSM feature phones are next on the agenda to be equipped with GPS technology," says ABI Research principal analyst Dominique Bonte.

Nokia launches mobile wallet phone

Handset giant Nokia introduced the Nokia 6212 classic, a new 3G handset featuring integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies enabling users to share content and access services as well as conduct payments and ticketing transactions. According to Nokia, travel tickets may be charged over the air, eliminating waits at service counters--users can securely store their credit card info on the 6212 classic and access accounts directly from the handset. A single tap on an NFC-enabled tag also enables users to receive new content like weblinks, audio files or contact data--they may also activate profiles and open applications including FM radio or web browsing. Photos and videos may be easily shared by tapping another NFC-capable phone and pairing with a Bluetooth NFC-enabled device. The Nokia 6212 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter in selected European and Asian markets.

Will Valentine's Day themed phones boost handset sales?

Carriers AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and Alltel have lall aunched red and pink phones for Valentine's Day. Verizon Wireless originally didn't market for V-Day, but now it seems they are on the bandwagon as well. It will be interesting to see sales numbers post-Valentine's Day to see if this marketing scheme worked.
