Base station makers revenues up 14.5 percent

Second quarter 2008 was a good time for base station manufacturers. Research firm EJL Wireless reports second quarter revenues for base station manufacturers was $13.8 billion, up 14.5 percent from the same quarter in 2007. EJL's report includes infrastructure revenues for Alca-Lu, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia Siemens, Nortel and ZTE. However it doesn't include Huawei. Report

Nokia Siemens scores a deal with China Mobile

Nokia Siemens Networks won a $864 million contract to design, build and maintain China Mobile's wireless network. The deal includes base stations and switches and will allow China Mobile to expand its network into key provinces and cities. Last month, Alcatel-Lucent's announced a $1 billion deal with China Mobile

The contract is a big win for Nokia Siemens as competition heats up in the infrastructure segment. Avian Securities analyst Matt Thornton says that despite this win for Nokia Siemens, Avian still expects a challenging environment for infrastructure manufacturers and forecasts flat growth in the near-term.

Chipmaker Infineon warns of larger loss this quarter

Chipmaker Infineon warned that it anticipates a larger operating loss and flat sales for its communication chips unit this quarter. Infineon cites delays in shipping a single chip solution for Nokia's ultra low-end phones. Just last month Infineon had said the deal was on track. Infineon shares fell 7.8 percent on the news.

The chipmaker had previously forecasted higher sales and a narrower operating loss for the communications chips division. Compounding the problem is the fact that the company had received lower-than-expected orders for another project that involved HSDPA chips for an unknown device customer. Infineon last month had won business with Samsung for HSDPA chips.

Earlier this month, Infineon CEO Wolfgang Ziebartstep announced plans to step down at the end of June after the German company last quarter reported its biggest loss since it was floated by Siemens in 2000.

Technology Business Research released its breakdown of the telecom infrastructure market, which grew $70 billion since 2006. As the telecom equipment maker market's mergers have reached completion, competition between the big three: Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens has gotten tighter. Sprint taps Nokia Siemens Networks for XOHM

Sprint tapped Nokia Siemens Networks to implement its subscriber database solution, which includes Apertio's One-NDS, (Network Directory Server), in an effort to provide a more personalized experience for future XOHM users. The deal will help Sprint to operate a Subscriber Profile System (SPS) based on a single, real-time common subscriber database, which the carrier expects to eliminate the need for multiple databases and to reduce administration and cost. The solution also supports a range of IP and IMS-based services, which are easily launched without service interruption.

Siemens Wireless Modules spins-off with T-Mobile

T-Mobile Venture Fund and private equity investor Granville Baird plan to buy Siemens Wireless Modules and spin-off the company. All 400 employees and the management team will be transferred to the new unit once the leveraged buyout is complete pending government approval. T-Mobile Venture will retain a minority stake in the company.

Nortel to cut 2,100 more jobs

Days after Siemens announced plans to cut some 3,000 workers, telecom networking vendor Nortel said it will cut 2,100 jobs as part of its turnaround efforts. Nortel reported a fourth quarter net loss of $844 million, or $1.70 a share, compared with an $80 million loss this time last year. Revenue fell 3.7 percent for the quarter to $3.2 billion, while the company had expected flat revenue with $100 million wiggle room.

The job cuts constitute a 6.2 percent reduction in its global workforce, but it also plans to move some 1,000 jobs to "higher growth and lower cost geographies." Nortel plans to sell some of its real estate assets as well. The changes should help the company save $300 million a year.

Nokia Siemens Networks today announced the intended acquisition of Apertio, the provider of open real-time subscriber data platforms and applications built specifically for mobile, fixed, and converged telecommunications operators. Siemens corruption probe widens: $556M

The Siemens corruption probe is widening after the German company found $556 million in suspicious transactions spanning seven years. The figure is nearly twice the amount the prosecutors had identified last month. Siemens also appointed new auditors Monday to review its books. The report also confirms that Thomas Ganswindt, a former senior executive and head of Siemens' telecom group, who resigned in September, has been arrested. An angry shareholders group subsequently called for the resignation of supervisory board chairman and former CEO (1992-2005) Heinrich von Pierer. von Pierer has shrugged off the demand. Siemens continues to attribute the alleged fraud to "individual acts" by current and former employees, but prosecutors are currently trying to figure out whether senior executives did enough to prevent the misdeeds, given the scale of the alleged corruption.

Siemens aims to double sales in China

During the next four years Siemens aims to double its sales in China and invest an additional $1.28 billion into the market. Siemens' China unit head, Richard Hausmann plans to double sales in China from the 50.4 billion yuan the company raked in last fiscal year. China revenue for the company rose 37 percent year-over-year, but the market only accounts for about five percent of the company's total market.

Police raid Siemens offices over fraud allegations

After a few scattered rumors of an impending raid, police officers and prosecutors raided the offices of Siemens today in Munich, Germany. The raid follows allegations of fraud on the part of some Siemens' employees. "Certain Siemens employees have engaged in fraud," Siemens spokesperson Adreas Schwab said. "We are cooperating fully with the investigation." The nearly 200 officers, tax inspectors and prosecutors searched 30 offices and private homes in Munich and surrounding areas. No word yet on whether any Siemens executives were involved in the alleged fraud.

Siemens under pressure from BenQ fallout

Siemens might find itself still on the hook for its struggling handset division that it sold to BenQ, which revealed it can't afford to pump anymore money into the business either. Germany's politicians, labor unions and the media are pressuring Siemens to step in and help BenQ since 3,000 German jobs are at stake. The most ridiculous part: Leaders of the IG Metall union have suggested that Siemens knew the mobile handset business was doomed for failure when BenQ acquired it so that it could avoid responsibility for the massive layoffs in Germany. Doesn't the blame lie with BenQ, which should have done some proper due diligence before buying the company?

Consolidation pressures Nortel, Motorola

Analysts are saying that Nortel and Motorola will have to make some bold moves in light of the joint venture Nokia and Siemens announced on Monday to combine their network infrastructure business. With the new joint venture on par in size and market value with Ericsson and the combined Lucent-Alcatel, where do Nortel and Motorola turn? We could actually see these vendors shed businesses or make strategic investments and acquisitions to become specialists in certain areas. The Wall Street Journal says Nortel is reportedly vying to buy or partner with Siemens's enterprise business, which provides Internet-based telephony services to companies.

Siemens wins mesh WiFi project in Toronto

Siemens scored a big deal with Toronto Hydro Telecom to make Toronto the largest ubiquitous WiFi zone in Canada. Negotiations relating to the terms and conditions of equipment supply, implementation and services are ongoing and have not yet been finalized. BelAir Networks, however, is the underlying mesh technology. Siemens is using network nodes based on BelAir's technology. The agreement with Toronto Hydro Telecom marks Siemens' entry into the Canadian wireless technology market and will provide coverage for an area of up to 10 sq. km and it is anticipated that it will be fully deployed in downtown Toronto by year-end 2006.
