Apple: No LTE-enabled iPhone 5 for carriers till we say so

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is calling the shots when it comes to which operators can offer the iPhone 5 as an LTE device, as the vendor is reportedly insisting candidates' networks first pass its own independent testing of their LTE network's performance. Rumors of this policy have been floating around for a couple of months, but Telecoms.com reports that a spokesperson for Swisscom confirmed, "Apple only enables 4G access after testing their device on an operator's live network." Though Swisscom launched its LTE network last week, the iPhone 5 it offers is not yet enabled for LTE functionality. Bengt Nordström, founder and CEO at industry consultancy NorthStream, told Telecoms.com that Apple's restrictive policy proves "who is running the industry," adding: "Apple have put themselves in the driving seat; it's really changing the game."
