Cygnus and Ubiquisys smooth video streaming experience over small cells
Ubiquisys' small cells are incorporating video optimization software from Cygnus Broadband to enhance the quality of video streaming.
The joint solution combines eQoE software from Cygnus-- the research and development arm of Wi-LAN-- with Ubiquisys' smart cell products, which include a range of intelligent LTE/3G/Wi-Fi small cell hotspots with an integrated computing platform based on Intel architecture.
The eQoE software examines application-layer LTE video traffic passing through a smart cell, using packet inspection to estimate the quantity of video queued in each user's device buffer. The software then dynamically adjusts the flow to that device as needed. The companies claim the joint solution can increase cell capacity utilization by 15 percent or more.
"Video is the real test of mobile QoE because any time the user has to wait for content to buffer it ruins the whole experience," said Pete Keevill, Ubiquisy cofounder and vice president of engineering. "Running Cygnus video optimization on the smart cell, closer to mobile users, releases the full potential of universal LTE streaming."
The application is distributed and remotely provisioned on smart cells through the Intel AppUp SMB Service, which is built on the Intel Hybrid Cloud software platform.
