Symmetricom announces small cell partnerships
Timing solutions provider Symmetricom added a small cells focus to its SyncWorld Ecosystem Program, which has drawn in partners including Alcatel-Lucent (NASDAQ: ALU), CS Holdings, Contela, Broadcom, Cavium, Mindspeed, Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) Atheros, Node-H and Rakon.
Symmetricom said its new small cells category was developed to facilitate validated deployments of timing and synchronization with various small cells products in 3G and LTE architectures. "Successful HetNet deployments require small cells to synchronize seamlessly with the macro base stations irrespective of backhaul type," the company said.
The company's SyncWorld program brings together players across the ecosystem including semiconductors, oscillators, software, test equipment and system vendors. "Working together, SyncWorld small cell members will be able to give service providers a comprehensive, integrated and simplified solution that is interoperable and supports the specifications required to support 4G/LTE networks," said Manish Gupta, Symmetricom vice president of marketing and business development.
Symmetricom's SoftClock supports both the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) standard as well as the Network Time Protocol (NTP) and is certified for operation on Cavium's Octeon Fusion base station-on-a-chip family of SoCs. Mindspeed said its Transcede small cell products will use Symmetricom's SCr/SCe NTP/ PTP and sGPS SoftClock solution for time and frequency accuracy.
Seoul-based CS Holdings worked with Symmetricom on validating the compliance of its LTE enterprise and residential femtocell devices with the LTE FDD standard. Similarly, Contela--also based in Seoul--said it worked with Symmetricom on integrating its ROSA-P (Rosalind public type) and ROSA-H (Rosalind home type) LTE enterprise and residential femtocell devices with the LTE FDD standard.
Oscillator provider Rakon is also a Symmetricom small cell partner. Symmetricom's NTP and PTP software "requires an extremely stable oscillator that maintains performance over temperature extremes and with low aging," said Mary Carbin, Rakon's business development manager.
Symmetricom announced in June that it was bringing its timing and synchronization solutions to the small cell market with the introduction of its SCr (residential) and SCe (enterprise) SoftClocks.
