T-Mobile logs 1.6M WiFi calls per month

T-Mobile USA announced that it now logs 1.6 million WiFi calls per month as it makes the service available from any open WiFi access point around the world to help businesses reduce international wireless calling.

The operator in October introduced WiFi Calling with MobileOffice that allows users with T-Mobile BlackBerry devices to use WiFi while in the office and have the same number as their desk phone.The service hooks into a PBX system and also allows users to access the feature in other places where they can get onto a WiFi network.

T-Mobile's service, however, requires a UMA (unlicensed mobile access) client built into the device, and the company announced a new T-Mobile Solution Providers program, characterized as a cooperative effort between T-Mobile and WLAN resellers and system integrators, to ensure businesses are optimized for UMA and have voice-optimized networks.

David Lampkin, divisional director with T-Mobile, told FierceBroadbandWireless that the operator hopes to have Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones running on the major operating platforms its business customers use in 2011.
