Towerstream, Boingo make Wi-Fi wholesale deal
Towerstream and Boingo Wireless have entered into a wholesale deal that allows Boingo to manage Internet services across Towerstream's Manhattan Wi-Fi network. The deal is designed to play a role in offloading heavy data traffic on wireless networks.
The network will broadcast the Boing Hotspot SSID and will be available to Boingo's retail Wi-Fi customers and other users who want to purchase Wi-Fi access as well as Boingo's wholesale platform service customers such as KT, Orange France, Skype and Verizon (NYSE:VZ).
The agreement--Towerstream's first wholesale deal--also includes provisions for Boingo to leverage additional networks Towerstream may build. Towerstream has previously indicated it would build in San Francisco and Chicago. The Boingo-managed network in Manhattan is expected to launch before the end of the year. Towerstream is using Ruckus Wireless 802.11n equipment.
