J2ME, Java 2
Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME) is the mobile version of the Sun Microsystems' Java 2 platform. J2ME enables Java-based applications on mobile phones and PDAs. J2ME promises to do for mobile Internet applications what Java and J2EE did for wired-line Internet applications.
J2ME has become the preferred platform for developing wireless applications. The technology allows handset makers, wireless carriers, and enterprises to quickly develop, install, and run a host of new applications on wireless networks and devices, including J2ME games, Web services, messaging clients, chat programs, and enterprise software.
J2ME faces competition from other wireless platforms, including Microsoft’s Smartphone 2002 and Pocket PC systems. J2ME also competes directly with Qualcomm’s BREW, which, like J2ME, seeks to offer a unified carrier content platform with an active developer community.
FierceWireless will keep you informed about the latest developments involving J2ME as well as competition such as Qualcomm's BREW. Sign up today and benefit!
