Few IoT segments hold as much promise as smart cities, a segment that wireless carriers like Verizon and AT&T are targeting specifically with executives, alliances and business units. Indeed, Navigant Research predicts the worldwide market for smart city technology will be worth $27.5 billion by 2023, more than doubling the $12.1 billion it will generate this year.
But while the burgeoning market seems to grow more competitive by the day, IBM and Cisco continue to lead the space, according to Navigant. Navigant recently assessed 16 leading smart city technology providers in 10 areas including vision, go-to-market strategies, partners, geographic reach and sales and marketing, and ranked IBM and Cisco ahead of other heavyweights including Microsoft, Siemens, Huawei, Hitachi and SAP. The smart city industry will become increasingly dynamic, though, and it will be very interesting to revisit this list in a few years. Article
