Nokia, AT&T Mexico collaborate on 5G

AT&T Mexico selected Nokia to help deploy 5G throughout the country.

Under the deal, Nokia will provide equipment from its 5G AirScale Radio Access Network (RAN) portfolio, powered by its latest ReefShark System-on-Chip chipset.

Nokia said it will also provide connectivity for 3G and 4G LTE services using the same hardware while offering an upgrade path to 5G.

“We are committed to providing our customers with the best experience possible. As we move forward with the deployment of our 5G network, we need the latest technology and the most reliable support services,” said AT&T Mexico CTO Nicole Rodriguez in a statement.

“We are excited to be part of this important milestone as a strategic partner for AT&T Mexico. Our latest AirScale portfolio creates a strong foundation for the operator's 5G evolution, enabling super-fast mobile connectivity and innovative use cases for its customers,” stated Nokia Mobile Networks President Tommi Uitto.

In addition, Nokia was selected as a strategic partner for AT&T Mexico’s 5G Innovation Lab. The 5G lab is a space where entrepreneurs, developers and users can meet to conduct trials.

According to research by Nokia and analysis firm Omdia, 5G will enable $730 billion of social and economic output in Mexico by 2035. The industries identified as most impacted by 5G are Information and Communications Technology (ICT), manufacturing, services, retail, real estate and construction.

In December, AT&T Mexico announced the beginning of its 5G network deployment.  The goal is for the 5G network to be operating in at least 25 cities by the end of 2022.
