Editor's Corner: Mobile venture capital

Want to know what is big in the mobile world? Just follow the money. All the following financing deals were announced in July:

Motricity scored a whopping $30 million in venture capital. Motricity (formerly PowerByHand) creates mobile content distribution software and infrastructure. Advanced Equities led the financing round and Motricity has raised a total of $80 million to date.

Cognima raised $12 million in a funding round led by Crescendo Ventures. Cognima is a mobile imaging company that helps users create online albums of their cameraphone images and video clips.

Third Screen Media is a mobile advertising firm that incorporates ads into WAP sites and BREW or J2ME apps. The company received $3 million in a round led by TD Capital Ventures.

Qmobile, a US firm that offers ringtones, wallpaper, and downloadable games, received $5 million in second round financing. The Grosvenor Funds was the lead investor.

Mobidia, a Canadian content delivery firm, received $2 million in its second round of financing from Discovery Capital Management. - Eli
