Open source industry consortium the LiMo Foundation announced the first release of its Linux-based LiMo Platform will arrive in March, with API specifications now available to the developer population. LiMo Foundation co-founders Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics and Vodafone all collaborated on Release 1, promising nearly all of the enabling technology has already been commercially deployed and proven within handsets now on the retail market. The modular open software platform is plug-in-based and hardware-independent, promising a secure runtime environment for downloaded applications. Middleware components may be implemented in either C or C++ programming languages.
"With LiMo announcing the first release of the platform that is common across many handset vendors and models, the stage is set for mobile innovation on Linux," said Vodafone's director of terminals technology and LiMo Foundation vice chairperson Guido Arnone in a prepared statement. "The LiMo Platform enables operators and handset makers to assign greater investment to technologies that improve the consumer experience and technology vendors and ISVs to target their products for a software platform that is being broadly adopted by the whole industry."
