Verizon Developer Community membership soars in first month

Verizon Wireless announced that more than 1,000 developers have registered to join its fledgling Verizon Developer Community effort since the operator held its first VDC Conference in late July. Registration remains ongoing at the website, with Verizon noting that hundreds of developers continue to sign up each week. The carrier adds that it recently added a new click-through agreement to its developer portal so coders can more efficiently submit their application concepts.

Through Sept. 20, registered VDC members can still submit their apps to Verizon's Apply Your Ideas competition. Apply Your Ideas promises a $50,000 cash grand prize and a $25,000 People's Choice award, as well as $10,000 cash prizes in each of five categories: Connect (social networking apps, communication tools, news and information), Entertain (games, multimedia apps), Guide (leverage location-based services and travel/navigation information), Save Time (tools, utilities, business, finance) and Enhance Living (lifestyle categories like health and shopping). Applications must be new to the BlackBerry wireless platform and support BlackBerry Storm smartphones to be eligible to win.
