Cisco deploys Thailand's first WiMax

Thailand internet services firm TT&T is deploying a WiMax network provided by Cisco at one of the country's educational institutions.

According to Cisco, the roll-out, which will be completed in September, will be the first production quality WiMax network in Thailand.

The Cisco Mobile WiMAX suite of solutions will be deployed by TT&T at the Mae Fah Luang University, which is located the Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand.

Financial details of the deal have not been announced.

Mae Fah Luang University selected TT&T to deploy the network after it obtained a WiMax license as part of the Pilot Tele-Center for Rural Area Education and Development Project.

Before deciding to collaborate with Cisco, TT&T tested Cisco Mobile WiMax in a school in Bangkok and found that the equipment was able to sustain impressive data throughput speeds even at a range of five to seven kilometers away in non line-of-sight conditions.
