Dealer fraud on the upswing

Telcos and pay TV firms are increasingly at risk of falling prey to fraud, with the number of attempts by dealers to defraud these companies increase.

According to software firm Neural Technologies, these fraud attempts come in the form of identity fraud, violation of pre/post validation checks, and abuse of commission/incentive schemes.

Examples include creation of false subscriptions, reactivation of old accounts, exploitation of weak or non-existent claw back controls or processes, stealing and selling of stocks, cloning of SIMs, unlocking of handsets, and changing of IMEI numbers. Cases of dealer fraud, a variant of internal fraud, has increased due in large part to the current financial climate.
