Deutsche Tel backs video as new voice

Deutsche Telekom is backing video conferencing with a new service it claims bridges the gap between the majority of services available today.

The cloud-based VideoMeet is launched in the UK, Germany and Austria today, and aims to drive video conferencing down the line from big global businesses, to SMEs and home workers. It is being launched in conjunction with US firm Blue Jeans Networks, and is compatible with systems from Cisco/Tandberg, Polycom, Lifesize, Skype and Google Video Chat.

"Video is the next voice," explains Rainer Deutschmann, senior vice president of core telco products at Deutsche Telekom, adding. "It adheres to high security standards and, as a genuine cloud service, it is simply scalable to the needs of our customers and does not require any investment.“

The service can be accessed by up to 25 people on smartphones as well as regular telepresence rooms, and works on IP and ISDN connections.
