Equinix expands EU footprint with ancotel buy

Data center operator Equinix is beefing up its European presence by acquiring German collocation an interconnection services provider ancotel.

The purchase brings Equinix access to 400 additional network customers, including 200 new networks and 6,000 cross connects, served by ancotel’s Frankfurt data center – a site offering 2,100 square meters of capacity. Equinix plans to use the site to create a network-dense collocation and connectivity campus in Germany, offering a mix of networks from Western and Eastern Europe.

Despite the focus on Europe, Eric Schwartz, president of Equinix EMEA, says the acquisition – which is due to close in the third quarter - will offer global benefits by tapping ancotel’s edge nodes in Hong Kong, London and Miami.

“Both companies enjoy strong reputations in the market and serve the world’s leading companies,” Schwartz notes, adding. “The agreement will also grow the total number of network customers available at Equinix from 700 to 900.”
