Ericsson provides single GSM/WCDMA platform

Celcom says it is the first operator in Malaysia to establish a single core network platform for both GSM and WCDMA technology with the deployment of Mobile Softswitch solution from Ericsson.

The company also said that the move is part of its on-going effort to modernise its infrastructure to deliver telephony in a more efficient and economic way, while creating a common foundation for new services.

The deployment of Ericsson Mobile Softswitch also marks the first step towards its core network relying an all-IP architecture.

The hope is that the common infrastructure will give Celcom a competitive edge in introducing services such as dual numbers on one SIM card or the same number in multiple devices, 3G services on 2G SIM card and mobile number portability, among others.
