German operators select Nokia in mobile TV trial

German mobile network operators E-Plus, O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone are collaborating on a pilot that will bring live mobile TV broadcasts to Nokia N92 handsets and other DVB-H-enabled devices.

In a release, the firms said the Nokia N92 mobiles being used in the pilot transmitted live broadcasts of 14 TV channels including MTV Music, Eurosport, regional channels, and six radio channels.

These channels were being broadcast using DVB-H, a technology that permitted live video and audio data to be broadcast to mobile devices, the statement said.

Up to 50 TV channels can be delivered with reduced cost over one network.

Any mobile device which supports DVB-H technology can receive the live TV and radio signals for the pilot, including the Nokia N92.

The pilot started in Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover and Munich and will run until August 31, except in Munich where the pilot ends on July 31.
