Huge potential for WiMAX in Russia

Industry analysts Maravedis has forecast that the Russian Federation will be amongst the world's top five wireless broadband and WiMAX opportunities. Driving this market will be the growing Russian economy and the demand for telecom services which are outstripping the capability of legacy networks. In addition, telecommunications investment is still centred on large conurbations leaving many rural areas without access to broadband. Maravedis reports that over 75 percent of Russians do not have access to basic dial-up Internet access, providing a huge potential market for wireless broadband operators. However, Maravedis warns that the Russian Federation is and will remain a price sensitive market and mobile WiMAX will need to offer much lower prices to be competitive. CPE costs will also need to be kept low.
