InterDigital touts Wi-Fi handoff for smartphones

InterDigital is targeting fresh business from makers of Android and Windows Mobile smartphones, with a new network optimization client for the operating systems.

The firm’s Smart Access Manager is a policy-driven client for wireless-enabled devices including smartphones and tablets that decides whether to route data traffic over Wi-Fi, 3G or LTE networks. The product differentiates by traffic type, and automatically selects the optimal network.

InterDigital executive president of business development, Michael Regensburg, claims the development enables handset vendor’s to differentiate their products based on the ability to offer Wi-Fi handoff. “Integration of Wi-Fi and more dynamic, distributed, network strategies are a necessary response to increasing mobile data demand,” he explains.

The firm has already completed integration work with Alcatel-Lucent’s lightRadio Wi-Fi infrastructure, which was unveiled early February, which Regensburg says offers operators an “end-to-end solution…that can address data demands.”
