January sees 52 new handsets; BlackBerry Bold No. 1 in Q4

handset trendsResearch firm Strategy Analytics tracks the engineering trends in the handset space, from battery capacity to weight and thickness to screen size. It issues a monthly report on new handsets released during that month, and provides average rankings based on the specifications of those handsets. During January, 52 new handsets were announced globally by 26 vendors. Motorola's Motoroi XT720 and Nokia's X6 16GB were the pick of the bunch, with the best combination of specifications. Strategy Analytics' fourth quarter 2009 shelf share analysis of 140 mobile network operators revealed that the BlackBerry Bold 9000 maintained its position as the No 1 handset, appearing in the portfolio of more carriers than any other handset.
