Japan works with EC on next-gen Web

Europe and Japan will work together on Web development in a pioneering collaboration designed to ensure future networks can cope with surging data traffic.

EC and Japanese officials will now call on industry to help define the direction of next generation Internet technology research, with the aim of presenting joint proposals on how to handle the increased traffic within the next two years.

A joint approach is considered essential to ensuring future fixed and mobile broadband networks are resilient enough to handle data traffic that is growing at a rate of 60% a year. Traffic accuracy and security will also be addressed.

Officials from both markets met last week to discuss the evolving nature of the Web, reaching “a firm understanding” on necessary areas of joint research.
