Dutch telco KPN, Hewlett Packard and Fujitsu are among ten major companies booted off Dow Jones’ annual sustainability index.
Not one technology or telecoms firm featured in the top ten global additions in the 2011 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), though the regional breakdown sees Alcatel-Lucent join the listing in Europe, NTT DoCoMo added in Asia Pacific, and Sprint Nextel in North America.
However, the regional breakdowns show those additions were offset by further losses. ST Microelectronics lost out in Europe, Microsoft in North America, and Telstra in Asia Pacific.
Dow Jones compiles the index in conjunction with sustainable investment firm SAM, analyzing the world’s top 2,500 firm’s performance based on economic, environmental and social criteria. The listing has been produced since 1999, and it has become a benchmark measure of the world’s best-performing corporations.
The 2011 survey sees a total of 41 companies added to the index and 23 removed – the bulk of which are based in Europe. SAM chief Michael Baldinger says the recent analysis shows that “sustainability remains a high priority on corporate and investor agendas,” despite “the current economic turmoil.”
Norwegian telco Telenor lauded its performance in the 2011 survey, noting this is the tenth year in a row it has made the list for mobile communications despite the bar for inclusion rising each year.
