Mayor of London jumps on '5G' bandwagon

The Mayor of London is reportedly the latest politician to exploit the hyperbole surrounding "5G" by pledging to roll out a 5G network in London by 2020.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Boris Johnson is set to unveil long-term infrastructure plans this week, working in collaboration with the University of Surrey.

"London is earning a reputation for being the tech capital of Europe and that is why we need to ensure every Londoner is able to access the very best digital connectivity. Rapidly improving the connectivity of this great city is a key part of the Infrastructure Plan for London," Johnson said, according to the Telegraph.

The new plan will apparently cover London's infrastructure needs between now and 2050.

Johnson's 5G pledges will no doubt be greeted with some ambivalence by industry watchers, not least because 5G has not even been defined yet. Claims are already being made that smartphone users will be able to download films 'in less than a second" with 5G.

The mayor's statement comes a few months after the UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced fresh efforts on 5G research and pledged to pump millions of pounds into the Internet of Things (IoT).

The European Commission also hopes that 5G will help the European Union reclaim leadership in the field of mobile technology development.
