Mobile data kit sales on the up

Sales of 3G and 4G mobile packet core equipment are bucking a downward trend in the overall infrastructure market, and will continue growing over the next five years, ABI Research predicts.

Although overall mobile core network kit sales fell 12% sequentially in 1Q13, the research firm notes global demand for packet core kit fueled a 22% rise in sales quarter on quarter. Principal analyst, Joe Hoffman, predicts total sales will hit $1.8 billion in 2013, and keep growing through 2018.

“Continued growth in 3G and 4G traffic will propel the mobile packet core infrastructure to a cumulative $10 billion market over the next five years,” Hoffman states.

Ericsson maintained its market leading position in the vendor battle during the quarter, despite Huawei gaining market share. Hoffman says Ericsson can expect “increasing pressure from Huawei and others as the market trends to 4G.”
