More than 10% of UK eBay purchases made via mobile

Online auction site eBay UK reported that mobile platforms now account for more than 10 per cent of all purchases on the company's auction site.

The company reported that an item is sold via eBay's mobile platforms on average every second. In the month of August, more than 2 million items were purchased via a mobile device. Interestingly, nearly twice the number of men shop on their mobiles than women.

Britons aren't discriminatory regarding their purchases via mobile devices either. Cars top the most expensive items. In July, a Ferrari F430 Spider F1 sold for more than £70,000. In August, the most expensive item bought was a black Bentley Continental GTC Auto, which sold for more £50,000.

"With consumers having instant access on-the-move, mobile shopping has come of age and as such retailers who don't take steps to embrace it now risk being left behind. While it took years for Internet shopping to become mainstream, we believe mobile commerce will do it in less than half the time," Angus McCarey, retail director for eBay UK, said in a statement. "Indeed, if sales on our UK site are anything to go by, we have never before seen such significant year over year growth--currently at triple digits.
