NEWS IN BRIEF: SIMalliance, Verizon Wireless, ITRI

SIMalliance has finalised the creation of its Near Field Communications (NFC) working group. The group has representation from all major SIM card manufacturers, and plans to work with mobile operators and handset vendors to highlight the value of SIM in NFC.

Verizon Wireless has admitted several of its employees had accessed the phone records of president-elect Barack Obama. The voice-only account had been dormant for several months, and the company maintains the employees did not access Obama's voicemail. The employees have been put on leave with pay while the company investigates.

ITRI is developing a folding smartphone display capable of allowing phones to double their screen size, according to PC World. The Taiwanese Industrial Technology Research Institute have developed a mock-up phone which would allow users to pull out a screen half-hidden under the attached QWERTY keyboard.
