Oni Communications boosts data rates tenfold

Portuguese operator Oni Communications claims a fiber link to Spain is now one of the fastest in Europe, following an Alcatel-Lucent upgrade.

The vendor has boosted data rates on the Lisbon to Badajoz line from 10Gbps to 100Gbps in a move Oni states will enable it to meet growing demand for high-bandwidth services. Alcatel-Lucent’s kit will also cut operating and maintenance costs on the line, the operator notes.

“Making the most of our existing fiber-optic networks is extremely important for us today, as it allows us to address exploding traffic growth,” Oni board member Ilídio Cardoso says.

Oni claims to be one of Europe’s leading alternative operators, with a 20% market share in the corporate sector.
