Pyramid Research: Smartphone sales in MEA to reach 238m units by 2020

Pyramid Research forecasts that annual smartphone sales in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) will grow by a CAGR of 15 per cent to reach 238 million units by 2020, surpassing 204 million unit sales in North America and 201 million in Latin America. The research company noted that operators in MEA are now looking at ways to boost smartphone usage and adoption on their networks in order to increase mobile data revenue. It has advised the adoption of indirect strategies such as the provision of localised over-the-top (OTT) content that can provide an incentive for consumers to buy smartphones and use mobile data services.
