Reding pushes for number portability in one day

Dow Jones Newswires reports that Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner for telecoms, said yesterday that all European consumers should have the right to change their service provider in a single day.

She was quoted saying, 'The right to switch operator puts pressure on the telecoms companies to offer the most competitive deals so that they can either find new customers or keep their existing ones,' in a video message on her web site. 'Empowered consumers are the best recipe for strong competition on the market, investment into attractive services and, at the end, lower prices for all."

On average it takes 8.5 days for a mobile number and 7.5 days for a fixed number to be switched to a new operator in the EU, ranging from days to switch mobile operator in Poland to one day in Ireland and Malta.
