There were just under 300 million registered mobile money accounts by the end of December 2014, according to a report from the GSMA. However, just 100 million accounts were active on a 90-day basis, which represents an active rate of 34.6 per cent of the 300 million registered accounts. The number of registered accounts also only accounts for an 8 per cent penetration of 3.7 billion mobile connections in the markets where mobile money services are available, the report said. Sub-Saharan Africa still has the highest proportion of mobile money registered accounts. By December 2014, 23.0 per cent of mobile connections in the region were linked with a mobile money account, whereas smartphone connections only represented 16.4 per cent of total mobile connections in this region, the report added.
