Report: M2M to grow to 400M connected devices by 2016

Smart metering will account for 40 per cent of the machine-to-machine market by 2016 when the number of connected devices reaches over 400 million, according to a new study from Juniper Research. However, according to the market research firm, revenues from per connection from smart metering M2M services will lag behind those generated by other M2M segments but will still create significant income as smart metering deployments increase. "High device numbers in the smart metering area of the M2M market will mean that smart metering will remain an important corner stone of the M2M industry," Anthony Cox, an analyst at Juniper Research, said in a statement. "Automotive telematics and embedded consumer electronics devices are also gaining momentum so the revenue prospects of M2M as a whole are improving." Release
